Professor Benjamin Sovacool discusses the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals
Professor Benjamin Sovacool, Director of the Sussex Energy Group at the University of Sussex gives his thoughts on Goal 7 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, discussing the social and behavioural dimensions of energy use in developing countries.
During the video, we see some startling figures, including the contribution of household pollution to disease and death. Professor Sovacool explores the growing problem and now leading cause of death of women in developing countries who are becoming subject to indoor air pollution from cooking stoves.
He also explores the social issue and attitudes of women in the home and the value put on education of young girls in developing countries. With mothers removing their daughters from school to help them cook and look after the home, what message does this project?
According to the Global Burden of Disease Attribute, shown in this video, death from indoor household pollution is the 4th biggest killer across the globe, higher than obesity and drug use.
